Michael Jackson, the ‘Prince of Peace’

Apparently, Michael Jackson bears more than one royal name.  He bears a messianic one, as well.
Some call him the King of Pop and others the Prince of Pop, but to the mayor of Gary, Indiana, Jackson is more than just a revolutionary performer — he’s the Prince of Peace.
From CNN:

The singer’s hometown of Gary, Indiana, [...]

Catholic iPhone

This Catholic spoof of the iPhone has been making the rounds on blogs lately, but here it is in case you haven’t seen it:

Solemnity of Ss. Peter and Paul

Today is the feast of the prince-apostles of the Church — Peter, our leader in the Faith, and Paul, its fearless preacher.  With second vespers of this solemnity also comes the end of the Pauline Year proclaimed by the Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI last June 2008.
I have fond memories of visiting the tombs of [...]

Corpus Christi in Washington

Sure, it may be the second must unchurched state in the Union, but the Faith is by no means dead in Washington.  Here is footage of the Corpus Christi procession at Star of the Sea Parish in Bremerton, Washington.  It is encouraging to see that one of the newly ordained priests for the Archdiocese of [...]

What is faith?

A New York Times blogger asked the question here. More than a few folks have chimed-in with an answer.

St. Josemaria Escriva de Balaguer

Today is the memorial (or solemnity for those who are members of the Prelature) of St. Josemaria Escriva de Balaguer, founder of Opus Dei.  A blessed and happy feastday to those in the Work and those whose spiritual lives have been shaped by the teachings of this holy man.
As for myself, the guidance of [...]

Pay it forward

What did you learn today, son?
That there still are good people in this world.
Had Mom or Dad asked me this today, I probably would have responded in these words.  Tonight, friend and colleague Erin and I were pleasantly informed by our waiter that our dinner had been paid for by an anonymous benefactor.  Looking just [...]

Summer greetings from the bishop…

Pretty cool.
His Excellency the Most Reverend Richard Stika, Bishop of Knoxville (TN), sent the youth of his diocese this message for the summer.  It’s a nice gesture to us young folk when our shepherds go the extra mile to minister in non-traditional but relevant ways, including the ever-popular online video.

Hats off to Whispers.

Reading Now

The summertime bookroll is…well…rolling along.  For the fifth read this summer, just in time for the Fourth of July, I have David McCullough’s award-winning novel 1776.  Friends and coworkers promise that it will be a delight; as for me, I’m welcoming the break from the more academic texts I’ve had my nose in so far.
